■White Day：ホワイト・デー (2005-03)

March 14th is White Day in Japan.（3月14日は、日本ではホワイト・デーです）

On this day, men present gifts to women in return for the chocolate they were given on Valentine's Day.（この日、男性はバレンタイン・デーにもらったチョコレートのお礼として女性にプレゼントを贈ります）

The custom started in 1978 in Fukuoka City when a sweet maker came up with the idea as a way to promote sales.（ホワイト・デーの習慣は1978年に福岡市で始まりました。製菓会社が、売り上げを増やす手段としてこのアイディアを考え出しました）

The custom eventually spread throughout the country.（この習慣は、最終的に、全国に広まりました）

At first, men gave women something white on the day, such as marshmallows or white chocolate.（当初、男性はホワイト・デーにマシュマロやホワイトチョコレートなど何か白いものを女性に贈っていました）

Currently, however, companies from many different fields are developing products for the day.（しかし現在では、さまざまな業種の企業がホワイト・デー向けの商品を開発しています）

White Day is unique to Japan.（ホワイト・デーは日本に特有のものです）

In Western countries, both men and women exchange presents on Valentine's Day.（西洋諸国では、男女ともバレンタイン・デーにプレゼントを贈り合います）
